Broxburn Dog Training Club was founded in
1972. Since then, some of Scotland’s top
handlers and dogs have passed through the
club competiting and judging in obedience,
agility and flyball at dog shows the length and
breadth of the country. Broxburn DTC welcomes
all breeds and sizes of dogs – pedigrees,
crossbreeds and rescue dogs from the local
rehoming centres. Most members start at the
puppy socialisation and pet obedience classes
and then progress on to the other disciplines
either for fun or for competition.
Members and dogs of Broxburn DTC can be
seen in the latest Long Blondes ‘Guilt’ music
video which was filmed in March 2008.
Agility
Dog agility came into being as demonstration
event in the early 1970s and has only recently
become a sport. As a sport it is based on the
more common equestrian events and combines
handler control, agility and confidence. The
sport of agility involves of a course set up of
many different obstacles including jumps,
tyres, tunnels, dog-walk, A-frame, see-saw and
weave poles. It is a fun, non-regimented sport
with a lot of spectator appeal. Almost any
breed of dog can participate in agility and the
jump heights are set accordingly.
Broxburn Dog Training Club has been
represented in Championship agility classes,
Scottish Dog of the Year, and the Small Team
agility at Crufts 2008.
Flyball
Flyball is a relay race between two teams of
four dogs. The course consists of a starting
line, four hurdles and a box. Whilst the handler
is at the start line, the dog has to negotiate the
four hurdles and press a pedal on the front of
the box which launches a tennis ball into the
air. The dog must then catch the tennis ball,
return over the hurdles and cross the start line
before the next dog in the team is allowed to
go. The first team to have all four dogs run
without errors wins the heat.
Broxburn Bandits flyball team have competed in
the flyball finals at Crufts for the past few years. |

Arches and Decorative Garden
Competition
(Sponsored by Watchman Alarms/
Sheena McMorrine)
To mark the involvement with the Ferry Fair all
the children are traditionally invited for the
Main Court to erect a decorative arch and the
Posy Girls and Escorts to decorate the garden
in front of their house.
The competition is judged by local people who
look at all the arches and then award 1st, 2nd
and 3rd prizes respectively.
Judging takes place between 8.00am and
10.30am and the winners are announced at the
end of the crowning ceremony. The work that
goes into the design of these Arches has to be
seen to be believed. So go around and have a
look and see.
Posy Girls and Escorts who may decorate their
gardens are given a prize of best in each
category.
Photographs of the arches can be viewed
