PAUSE FOR THOUGHT

During all the fun and celebrations which rightly allow the residents of and visitors to Queensferry to have so much enjoyment at this time every year it is only right that we should give a moment of pause for thought to the people no longer with us who have contributed so much to past Ferry Fairs.

The first to come to mind is past vice-chairman of many years standing, the late Jim Liddell, and a fitting tribute to his memory from our current chairman Graham Holmes is included elsewhere on this website.

We should not forget however the contribution to the success of the Ferry Fair from three other outstanding individuals, each of whom has sadly passed away during the year just gone and each of whom will be fondly remembered

The unforgettable Captain Kenneth L. Crowther, who served as chairman for a number of years and was in the past instrumental in saving our Fair from closure, passed away very suddenly just before the 2005 event and his huge presence and contribution to this community will surely never be forgotten.

It is fitting also that we should remember the important contribution to our historic ceremony made by the individuals who have carried out subsidiary but very important roles with great distinction.  The inimitable William “Wuggy” McPhillips, who played the part of our Town Crier in recent years and who also took part in fundraising activities has passed away since last year’s Fair following a short illness:  Wuggy was a unique character, a wee man with a huge heart and his presence is still sadly missed.

Another very individual and unforgettable character who has also died in the past year, Alan Reid, scion of a long-standing Ferry family, took the important and arduous role of Burryman for some twenty-five years and will also be remembered with much affection and respect.

We would do well to reflect that it is thanks to people such as those mentioned above and the others who have faithfully followed them that the wonderful tradition of our Ferry Fair continues and will hopefully do so in the years to come.
