Queen Margaret’s Boat
For
many years, in recognition of the fact that Queensferry owes its name to Queen
Margaret who was responsible for the introduction of a ferry service connecting
the north and south banks of the Forth, a schoolgirl representing Queen Margaret
has featured in the Ferry Fair Day procession and tour of the Burgh.
Traditionally, she and her entourage have joined the procession seated in a boat
which serves to represent “Queen Margaret’s Boat”. The Queen is accompanied by
her sisters, Princess Agatha and Princess Christina with her son Prince Edgar
and two sailors to ensure safe passage.
The original boat which played its part for many years, originally given to the Fair by
the late local joiner and undertaker, Tommy Ruthven, had, despite care and
maintenance by local men Brian Murray and Brian Collins, deteriorated to such an
extent that it became unserviceable.
Queensferry, incidentally, owes a debt of gratitude to the two Brian’s for
looking after the boat and for towing it in the procession over the years.
We are therefore indebted to John Watson, ex-proprietor and operator of “The
Maid of the Forth”, who painstakingly designed and constructed a new Queen
Margaret’s Boat. John’s design is intended to replicate the boat as the original
probably looked all these centuries ago. John has also offered to tow the boat
in the procession: he will also ensure careful storage and maintenance of the
boat.
Our photograph portrays John displaying his creation which is certain to be the
showpiece of this and future Fair Day processions.
